The number of barangays or villages in the country has climbed to 41,982 as of March 31, 2006, following the creation of two more barangays this year.

According to the National Statistical Coordination Board, the youngest barangay was Barangay Ligue, which was created on March 25 out of its mother barangay Pantar in Lumbatan, Lanao del Sur.

On March 4, a plebiscite ratified the creation of Barangay Tumana out of its mother barangay Concepcion Uno in Marikina City.

Data also show that the Philippines is now composed of 17 regions, 79 provinces, 117 cities, and 1,501 municipalities.

About half of these local government units are located in Luzon, the country's largest island, NSCB said.

Luzon has eight regions, 37 provinces, 57 cities, 690 municipalities and 20,057 barangays.

Luzon accounts for 47 percent of all regions and provinces, 49 percent of cities, 46 percent of municipalities and 48 percent of barangays.
