CLARK SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE -- The Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) here is expected to become a vital entry point for Europeans coming to Asia, with additional flights given to Gulf Air, Bahrain's flag carrier, an official of the Clark development agency said.

"Gulf Air, being a large Middle Eastern full-service international airline with flights to Europe and US, opens numerous possibilities for our overseas Filipino workers to now make Clark their airport as well as bring foreign tourists to come to the country via DMIA," said Victor Jose Luciano, executive vice president of Clark Development Corp.

Recently concluded air talks here entitled Gulf Air to two more flights a week, bringing total entitlements to four, Luciano said.

Gulf Air could "potentially fly to Clark on seven frequencies weekly on their Bahrain-Clark and vice-versa route," he said

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has expressed concern on the Gulf Air flights.

PAL said in a statement: "Gulf Air's first priority is to fly to Manila. If they do not secure the Manila rights, they may consider flying Clark as an alternative. If they do so, they will have to invest in the route to develop Clark, which is good for Clark. But if they get Manila, then it's surely 'Goodbye, Clark.'" Tonette Orejas, with INQ7.net
